GQ Korea, man of the year

2018.11.21 | Interview

How many days ago was your birthday? Congratulations. How was your birthday?

The day before, I had a glass of soju with my friends, and the day I spent the day alone at home, doing nothing.

It was quiet and easy.

I celebrate anniversaries so much that I am ashamed. That day too, (Jo) Seho's close siblings screamed and left saying, "It's my brother's birthday, but we should have dinner together" (laughs). He said he needed a gift and told me not to buy it.

So you didn't get any presents for this birthday?

I have one. Truffle salt. I like to write anywhere. It is delicious if you eat it with samgyetang or dip it in chicken. These days, I usually eat alone at home and it was a nice gift.

Is there a reason you've been mostly home alone lately?

Actually, this is how I feel these days. I was worried that they would hate me if I was in the crowd, and uncomfortable thoughts and feelings gradually emerged. There were many difficult and difficult things while doing "Life", there was disappointment in myself and I felt a sense of responsibility. As a result, I think I am in a depressed state.

Although the story of "Life" went to the mountains further back, I liked 'Jinwoo Ye', who kept his beliefs. It was nice to see a different side of Lee Dong Wook besides the crush.

So, I chose this job, but I think I missed the problem of expressing the character. I don't want to blame anything else. The biggest problem is that I cannot trust myself because I have low self-esteem, but in the end there is no answer. I have to move.

I like the word "in motion".

Because if you keep sinking, nothing will be solved. I have also decided on my next project, so in another job, I have to break the wall that I felt when I collided with another character. In baseball, the team that loses comes back with a home run. I don't know if it will be a home run, a hit or a foul, but first you have to hit the ball.

You played the role of a dating lawyer in your next job "Touch Your Heart," right?

He's a friend, I don't know if he's ever been in a relationship. It's a full-blown rom-com after 6 years, but since I'm 38 in Korean age, this might not be the last rom-com (laughs). I think it would be a shame if I did it as I got older, so I try to do it when I can.

I cannot agree with you because it is a basic element. Actor Lee Dong Wook became more handsome as he got older.

(laughs), the importance of management.

Looking back at work at the beginning of my debut, I realized that he had a rough, rough image when he was young. The current Lee Dong Wook has a slightly resigned elegance, or a beauty that seems to have settled down and become transparent after going through turbulence. I don't think it's just an external problem.

A lot has happened in 19 years. There were conflicts, failures, meeting someone and letting go. When you meet someone, there are times when you feel like "I think I'm done if I've done this." Sometimes it is together, sometimes it is just one. If you repeat that process, later on, you won't hate it, and only the mind will remain saying, "You worked hard, didn't you hate it?" As my heart fades, I miss the hard times.

Are there many tears? I think he must be one of the best male actors in Korea who can shed tears.

I don't cry once a year. Was the most recent 3 years ago?

How not to cry like that?

Hiding negative emotions has become a habit. I don't want to upset the people around me by saying that I don't feel well. But why don't you cry when you're alone? I guess my emotions are dry (laughs).

He does not like to cause trouble around him.

Actually. By the time I act disingenuous, the people I am in contact with are having a hard time. For example, I clicked on today's footage because I wasn't feeling well. So what about all these staff and all the people involved? Whether it's not about keeping promises, creating conflict, or leaving the set, you've never done it before. It's only when I'm grumbling.

Basically, I feel like a person with consideration for others. At the beginning of the interview, I was a bit surprised when I saw that he asked if it was cold, gave up a more comfortable chair and brought an extra chair to use as a table. Usually it's the reporter's job, but it must have felt like losing a player.

Well, I thought it would be awkward. During filming, I often check to see if the drama staff and my staff are in a comfortable state. I think these things don't even care, they are just social. That's how it is. It's just that my job is a bit unusual, but I'm like the average person in society. We try not to create things that cause us problems and we take care of each other.

It's the other way around?

Yes. I think this is partly due to my mother, but when she was young, she always told me not to bully my friends. From kindergarten, a head is bigger than other children. I was a tall kid in elementary, middle and high school. She then she said that she was concerned that I would bully children and that you should always think about how other children feel. I think that attitude has gone so far.

People who can think from the point of view of others have a broad perspective. Are you interested in the world around you?

I only watch as much as I watch other people's news. What recently interested me is the elections to the US House of Representatives. Democrats are predicting their victory as Democrats and Republicans as Republicans, so what will be the result? It is closely related to the situation in Korea, so I couldn't help paying attention.

For South Korea, the context is complicated due to inter-Korean relations.

I wish the Republican Party would give me strength because of the inter-Korean problems, but considering how much Trump is implementing his country-oriented policies, it can't be. I believe that Korea's diplomatic posture will be very important in the future. But that's what makes me curious these days. The more peaceful inter-Korean relations are, the more economic stability should be achieved. Why do they fluctuate?

The sluggish domestic demand is probably the main reason, but it is also closely related to the international situation.

So I think you should look at it more widely. These days, the news is getting through, so I have a choice to cook. Even with the same event, we are trying to deliver an arbitrary message in a different frame.

Fake news is everywhere. What do you think "real" means?

That is always difficult. The real thing that I believe in may not be real, so I tend to doubt that all of that is true. Pens are scary. I can influence people's thinking, but the problem is that what I think is not justice ... Are you like a conspiracy theorist? (laughs). Looking at it, I think I am able to discern what kind of news I want to tell and what kind of story I want to tell.

Why don't you try acting like a journalist someday?

Would that be good? A reporter specialized in reports or investigative reports. I want to cover reporters. I was very impressed by the bravery of the reporters in the movie "Spotlight."

By the way, I never thought we could talk about such a topic.

It's just that other people are really interested. What is the current situation in the US ?, How is the Korean economy and not everyone is interested in it? It is not?

Surprisingly, there are many people who are not interested in things that are not their own. The world is not inseparable from me.

I sympathize. I can't think of anything isolated. From a young age, voting was very important to me. After I obtained the right to vote, I voted in all the elections in which I was able to exercise my right to vote. Politics is inseparable from the world I live in, and everything runs in gear, so I want to maintain the minimum rights and obligations that a person can exercise. So I pay a lot of taxes.

Exercise your right to vote, pay your taxes in good faith. Is there a clear sense of citizenship?

Hey, because he's not particularly aware or anything like that. It is like all the others.

I use the phrase "as much as the others" a lot. Are you someone who values common sense?

Common sense, common sense, is an essential part of this job. It's easy to get caught up in this job. But I live not only as an actor, but also as Lee Dong Wook, a member of society.

I'm glad to hear the universal, common sense and humane responses from Lee Dong Wook, a member of the society. What do you think is important as an actor Lee Dong Wook?

There is such a thing, we do the results together. The point you want with the staff and colleagues is so good! There are times when it fits in and produces very good results. Whether it's a cut or a scene, it's very exciting when that happens. The joy of sharing that satisfaction with staff and co-workers is indescribable.

Whether it's a drama or a movie, it's a collaboration.

That's how it is. It is a job that you can never do alone. Sometimes I envy musicians who write lyrics, compose and sing alone (laughs)

Do you think today's shoot came out with that cut that everyone knew?

I think it came out. The late fall weather was perfect, it was good to do and the clothes and poses were new. I don't actually look at photos in the field because I don't think it's an area that I would meddle in. You will find out when you read the book later. That's it, I say.
